The city is replacing single-use plastic containers with sustainable alternatives starting in 2025, in line with Egalim and AGEC laws.

The city of Courbevoie is implementing measures to reduce plastic in its school canteens and nurseries, in response to the Egalim and AGEC laws, aiming to protect public health and the environment.

In accordance with the Egalim laws of 2018 and AGEC of 2020, which ban plastic in the kitchens of school canteens and nurseries from January 1, 2025, for all municipalities with over 2000 inhabitants, Courbevoie is undertaking this transition. This measure affects food containers for cooking, reheating, or serving.
The challenge is twofold: it is a matter of public health, as reheating plastic containers is linked to proven harmful effects of endocrine disruptors, and an environmental issue aimed at eliminating plastics, particularly single-use ones.
Courbevoie has already taken significant steps: since 2022, disposable plastic utensils and containers have been eliminated in all canteens. In 2024, the city acquired non-disposable containers made of glass or stainless steel, an initiative co-financed by the Île-de-France Region as part of the ecological and solidarity participatory budget.
Furthermore, since 2021, water is no longer served in bottles in early childhood establishments, favoring tap water. Purchases of disposable or single-use plastic materials are being progressively reduced in the city's care facilities, with the long-term goal of eliminating these products.
The recent school catering fair in June 2026 was organized under the « 0 plastic » theme. Children received reusable water bottles with filtered water, a simple and local snack (viennese bread and chocolate squares) without individual packaging, and fair-trade milk served in reusable, bio-based cups, replacing individual cartons.
