The Goussainville English Boxing club, established in 2022, has rapidly attracted 142 members by focusing on discipline, confidence, and self-improvement.
Taken over in 2023 by Fernando de Sousa, who also heads ASMEP judo, the club, formerly known as Boxe Olympique de Gouss, was renamed Boxe Anglaise de Goussainville with the ambition to become a local sports benchmark. To achieve this, he has partnered with Carlos Tavares, named best English boxing coach by the French Boxing Federation in 2025, and boasts an impressive record in kickboxing.
Beyond performance, Carlos Tavares emphasizes sharing his passion and the values of boxing, which he views as an art requiring intelligence, self-control, rigor, and dedication. "True talent is hard work," he states, highlighting the importance of listening, observing, and practicing to master English boxing techniques.
The club welcomes all ages from 5 years old and all levels, whether for recreational practice or competition. "Everyone has a place," assures Carlos Tavares, promising personalized support to help each member progress and achieve their goals. In the 2025-2026 season, a student from Goussainville was crowned heavyweight champion in a Parisian tournament, and another won a departmental championship.
With the support of the municipality, the club, which grew from 65 to 142 members in three years, now has high-performance equipment at the Nelson Mandela gymnasium. The coach dreams of one day sending a student to compete in Las Vegas, the temple of boxing.
“
"I pass on my philosophy to each of my students. I am a competitive coach, but I defend a vision of boxing accessible to all. For me, this discipline is based on rigor, determination, and self-improvement. Joining a club also means committing. It requires regularity and consistency, even for those who practice boxing recreationally. Training sessions are not à la carte: everyone must invest and be present to progress. A mindset that will serve each of our members in their daily lives."
