The Department has initiated the reconstruction of the Benjamin Franklin college in Épône, a €35 million project to replace the old, dilapidated building constructed in 1982. The capacity will increase from 600 to 800 students.
Pierre Bédier, president of the Department, highlighted the area's strong demographic growth as justification for this investment. During the symbolic groundbreaking ceremony, he noted that the construction, taking place near the old site, will not impact students. The new premises are expected to be ready for the 2028 school year, with external landscaping completed by 2030.
Cécile Dumoulin, vice-president for colleges, emphasized the project's importance in adapting the facility to current educational methods and climate challenges. The new college will feature a Fab Lab, a web radio, an educational garden, and a bike shelter to promote sustainable transport.
The project prioritizes environmental goals with a wood structure and frame, a green roof, photovoltaic panels, a biomass heating system, rainwater management, 60% green spaces, and 135 trees planted to combat the urban heat island effect.
Pierre Bédier concluded by stating that intelligence, hard work, and respect are crucial for building the future, expressing his hope that the students of the new Épône college will contribute to it.
In parallel, the Department is supporting the municipality of Épône with its sports facilities, allocating €1.2 million for the construction of three tennis courts.
