The collective work, led by Anthony Juton, an associate professor at the Engineering and Research Department (DER) of Electrical and Digital Engineering Sciences (SIEN) at the École normale supérieure (ENS) Paris-Saclay, provides an in-depth analysis of electric vehicles. Resulting from a collaboration between renowned academics and engineers, it covers the operating principles, current technologies, and future prospects of electromobility.
Published by Éditions Dunod in October 2026, the 336-page book, "Introduction to Electric Vehicles - Principles, Technologies, Perspectives," addresses the transformations in the automotive sector. It highlights the evolution of concerns, moving from reducing gasoline engine consumption to optimizing the range of electric vehicles through components like silicon carbide. Professionals must now consider aspects such as electrical machine losses and the supply of lithium-ion cells, which are predominantly of Asian origin.
This pedagogical and accessible work is aimed at a broad audience, including students, engineers, technicians, teachers, automotive professionals, and the simply curious. It seeks to shed light on the technologies redefining vehicles and our mobility. The authors, from institutions like ENS Paris-Saclay, IUT de Cachan, Université Paris-Est Créteil, Université Grenoble Alpes, and companies such as Renault, Stellantis, and Valeo, as well as IFP Énergies nouvelles (IFPEN), share their complementary knowledge.
The book is structured into four parts. The first quantifies the need for land transport, compares thermal, hybrid, and electric powertrains, and examines the associated environmental, geopolitical, and economic challenges. The second part focuses on the powertrain, detailing the principles of the three main families of motors, their inverters, and controls, as well as their potential evolutions. The third part is dedicated to the battery, explaining its operating principles, different chemistries, performance, limitations, and future prospects. Finally, the fourth part presents various charging systems, including onboard chargers, high-power charging, and wireless charging.
