On September 21, 2026, Bichat – Claude-Bernard Hospital inaugurated a new day hospital dedicated to oncology, thereby improving care for patients undergoing treatment for various cancers.

Since September 21, 2026, the Bichat – Claude-Bernard hospital has enhanced its oncology care services with the opening of a new day hospital, located in the North Wing of the 13th floor. This new unit allows patients treated and operated on at Bichat to receive peri-operative treatments – neoadjuvant and adjuvant – on-site, which have become essential for their management.
This initiative addresses an identified need for patients with early-stage or locally advanced breast, gynecological, ENT, and urological cancers. Made possible by a new allocation, its creation specifically aims to improve the continuity of oncology care pathways. Previously, some patients operated on at Bichat had to be referred to other facilities, such as Louis-Mourier hospital or public or private establishments in the area, to receive chemotherapy, sometimes far from their place of residence.
The opening of this day hospital will now enable Bichat to administer chemotherapies, immunotherapies, and other peri-operative systemic treatments, in close collaboration with surgical teams. Pr Gérard Zalcman, head of the thoracic oncology department and referent for the new oncology day unit, emphasizes that this organization will simplify patients' journeys, make them more understandable, and shorten travel times, while also fostering better coordination between medical and surgical treatments and ensuring adherence to recommended care timelines.
Located in the North Wing of the 13th floor, the new day hospital is equipped with six chairs and will eventually accommodate up to eight patients per day. In addition to administering treatments, the unit will also handle various aspects of the oncological journey: complementary examinations, assessments, medical follow-up, consultations, and psycho-oncology and social support. Two senior medical oncologists and an intern, supported by the paramedical team, will provide this care.
This opening further strengthens Bichat's oncology care services and team coordination around patients, with the goal of offering a smoother pathway and keeping the various stages of their care on the same site as much as possible. It also aligns with a broader vision for developing oncology in northern Paris and anticipates the organization that will be deployed within the future Saint-Ouen Grand Paris Nord hospital and university campus. Pr Zalcman believes that this setup will facilitate the transition to the future Hôpital Nord, which is set to become the 3rd university oncology hospital of AP-HP, serving the needs of a population of over two million inhabitants.
