The inclusion of the freedom to undergo a voluntary termination of pregnancy (IVG) in the French Constitution on March 8, 2024, marks a historic advancement. This right, secured nearly 50 years ago with the Veil Law, still faces persistent obstacles across the country.
According to the first barometer on abortion access, published in September 2024 by Ifop for Le Planning familial, 85% of respondents strongly support abortion rights, yet 89% acknowledge existing barriers. Among women who have had an IVG, 54% waited over seven days for an appointment, two-thirds feared judgment or remarks, one-third reported pressure during their process, and half did not obtain work leave for the procedure.
Given these findings, reliable and accessible information is crucial. In Vitry-sur-Seine, the Sexual Health Centers (CSS) provide confidential support to individuals seeking information or assistance with their IVG process, directing them to appropriate professionals and facilities.
Four CSS centers are located in Vitry: Square de la Galerie (1 square de la Galerie, +33 1 55 53 00 35), Anatole-France (117 rue Balzac, +33 1 46 82 80 40), Commune-de-Paris (2 avenue de la Commune-de-Paris, +33 1 56 71 41 97), and Gérard-Philipe (13 rue Gérard-Philipe, +33 1 56 71 41 96). The municipal health center also offers support for medical abortions.
IVG procedures are free of charge and available to everyone, regardless of age or social security coverage. In France, medical abortion is possible up to 7 weeks of pregnancy (9 weeks after the last menstrual period), and surgical abortion up to 14 weeks of pregnancy (16 weeks after the last menstrual period).
