The American Geophysical Union (AGU) has announced the recipients of its 2026 awards, which annually honor scientists for their outstanding contributions to Earth and space sciences, as well as to education, communication, and outreach.
Among the scientists distinguished this year is Athéna Coustenis, a planetary scientist at the Laboratory for Instrumentation and Research in Astrophysics (LIRA) of the Paris Observatory - PSL.
Athéna Coustenis is presented with the Charles A. Whitten Medal. This award, given biennially by the AGU, recognizes an experienced scientist for remarkable work on the shape and dynamics of Earth and planets.
The Charles A. Whitten Medal specifically honors research in planetary sciences, geodesy, geophysics, seismology, and tectonophysics. This recognition adds to an already extensive list of international distinctions received by the scientist.
