Since the start of the school year in September, the municipality of La Courneuve has generalized supervised study sessions in elementary schools, providing homework assistance, promoting student autonomy, and offering recreational activities.

At the Anatole-France elementary school, sixteen CP (first grade) students immersed themselves in their homework after snack time on Monday, October 12th, at 4:30 PM. Guided by Cassandra, an activity leader, and Radia, deputy director of the leisure center, they worked on their lessons.
This initiative responds to a strong demand from parents. The new municipality reinforced the educational dimension of the after-school program, which runs from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM, while kindergarten retains activities focused on leisure.
The classroom atmosphere is stimulating. The activity leader asks questions, and the children respond enthusiastically, like Harsica, 6 years old, who immediately writes down an answer about vocabulary. Alhussein, 5 years old, practices math. Isabelle Lamirault, the school principal, is also present to assist the students.
The method emphasizes autonomy: students sometimes help each other and call on supervisors for correction. This study time does not prevent homework from being done at home in the evening.
Once lessons are completed, children can engage in socio-educational games, such as board games or reading comic books. This program is highly successful, with sixty-three students attending on this day at the Anatole-France school. The establishment employs an activity leader dedicated to CP students and three school teachers for CE1 to CM2 levels.
A new daily fee replaces the overall package for the after-school program. For more information, it is advisable to contact the child's leisure center management or write to reservations.loisirs@lacourneuve.fr.
Furthermore, 'Coup de Pouce' clubs, a program to prevent academic failure focused on reading and self-confidence, will be launched soon. Approved at the municipal council meeting on October 8th and conducted in partnership with the Coup de pouce association, this program will establish thirteen Reading-Writing clubs for the 2026-2027 school year. Each club will host five to six CP students, with three 1.5-hour sessions per week after class. Families will be involved through exchange sessions and cultural outings. The clubs will start after the autumn holidays.
