The René-Descartes College in Tremblay-en-France is launching a major renovation and expansion project, starting this summer and scheduled for completion by early 2030, to accommodate up to 750 students in improved conditions.

Built in 1973, the René-Descartes college, located on avenue Gilbert-Berger, is embarking on its most significant transformation since its opening. Facing increasing student numbers and aging buildings, a large-scale renovation program began this summer, with completion expected in early 2030. The institution will then be able to accommodate up to 750 students, in addition to the Segpa and Ulis programs.
The works, managed by the Department, involve a complete renovation of the existing buildings: exterior thermal insulation, replacement of windows and doors, modernization of facades using durable materials like wood and brick, and a reorganization of interior spaces to enhance learning and working conditions. New facilities will also be created, including more than ten additional classrooms, a physical education and sports room, and a multi-purpose hall accessible to local associations and the City outside of school hours.
This project addresses a strong demand from the educational community and was highlighted by the Mayor of Tremblay-en-France, Virginie De Carvalho, during an information meeting in late June. She emphasized that the 20 million euros invested by the Department will facilitate a substantial and long-awaited renovation, resulting from the mobilization of parents supported by the municipality.
The project's ambition is to preserve the site's green setting and enhance its landscape quality. The plans include a new, more welcoming entrance plaza, a greened playground designed as an "oasis courtyard," plantings adapted to the local climate and biodiversity, and 142 bicycle parking spaces.
To minimize disruption and ensure safety, construction zones are strictly separated from areas used by students and staff. A monitoring committee, comprising representatives from the Department, the municipality, architects, construction companies, the college's management, teachers, and parent representatives, has been established and will remain active throughout the works.
The construction schedule is divided into four phases, from summer 2026 to January 2030, to maintain the college's operation and ensure safety. Phase one (June 2026 - August 2027) will cover the extension, construction of the sports area shell, and temporary facilities. Phase two (October 2027 - July 2028) will focus on rehabilitating the west wing of building A and the Segpa workshop. From September 2028 to August 2029, the central wing and the culture and knowledge center will be renovated. Finally, summer 2029 will be dedicated to landscaping the outdoor spaces and the oasis courtyard, before the project's completion in January 2030.
