The Axe Majeur, a monumental artwork conceived by artist Dani Karavan and urban planner Michel Jaouën, is celebrating its 40th anniversary. This creation, blending sculpture, landscape, urbanism, and architecture, has shaped the landscape of Cergy-Pontoise since its first station, the Tour belvédère, opened in 1986. The Agglomeration invites the public to celebrate this milestone on Saturday, October 10th, with a day dedicated to experience and discovery.
Gradually built in sync with the city's development, the Axe Majeur has evolved over time, notably with the addition of the red footbridge crossing the Oise river and the amphitheater completed in 2008. Recognized as a Regional Heritage Site in 2020 and Remarkable Contemporary Architecture in 2022, it has become a cherished living space for walks, runs, gatherings, and enjoying the scenery.
On Saturday, October 10th, the twelve stations of the artwork, from Place Hubert-Renaud to the Île de loisirs, will serve as the thread for a diverse program. A new tourist information panel will be unveiled at 11:30 AM on the Terrasse, offering insights into the artwork's construction and perspectives. The day will feature the choreographic performance Lignes de fuite by the Sophie Courtin company, tours of the Tour Karavan, orienteering events, and workshops by CY Cergy Paris Université as part of the Fête de la science.
Sports activities, including the 12 Col’Run organized by EACPA, will explore the monumental staircase and the Jardin des Droits de l’Homme. The program also includes science, biodiversity, and ecology-focused events. For a different perspective, commented cruises will depart from Port Cergy at 3 PM and 4 PM, offering views of the Axe Majeur from the Oise river. Electric boat or catamaran excursions, accessible to people with reduced mobility, will allow close-up views of the Pyramide and the Île astronomique.
