Committed to ecological transition, AP-HP has been measuring its GHG emissions since 2022. In 2025, the absolute balance shows a +3.8% increase compared to 2024, driven by construction work. However, on a comparable scope and excluding construction emissions, emissions are stabilizing with a -0.2% decrease in absolute value and -2.4% when reported per hospitalization day.
This trend is explained by slow growth in emissions from care activities (medications, lab consumables, medical devices), offset by a significant increase in emissions from construction. Nevertheless, emissions from travel (-3.7%), energy (-4.5%), medical gases (-20%), and single-use care products (-28%) have decreased. These results are an encouraging first sign of the institution's decarbonization actions.
Key initiatives in high-emission specialties are contributing to this positive trend. Hospitals like Armand-Trousseau, Beaujon, Henri-Mondor, Tenon, Avicenne, and Georges-Pompidou have launched efforts to reduce the impact of operating rooms, including the use of reusable cups, non-sterile compresses, pre-filled syringes, and optimized anesthetic gas management.
AP-HP's intensive care units, such as Henri-Mondor and Pitié-Salpêtrière, are also proactive in ecological transition. Medication and medical device consumption are analyzed, patient pathways are studied, and concrete actions are implemented with the support of AP-HP pharmacists and medico-technical services. AP-HP is finalizing a certification process for its care services to structure these approaches.
Furthermore, AP-HP continues to raise awareness among its teams through educational workshops and specialized training to highlight the environmental challenges of hospital activities and encourage virtuous initiatives.
