The Pitié-Salpêtrière AP-HP hospital is advancing in the fight against cancer with the implementation of a high-precision radiotherapy equipment. This cutting-edge technology enables millimeter-accurate targeting, particularly for complex tumors.
Thanks to this new particle accelerator, combined with real-time imaging and control systems, the patient's position is verified before and during the session. Any movement detected beyond defined thresholds automatically interrupts the treatment beam, thus enhancing patient safety.
“"This new machine strengthens our ability to offer very high-precision radiotherapy treatments, with daily positioning control and increased safety during irradiation."
This technology is particularly suited for stereotactic radiotherapy, which requires extreme precision to treat the tumor while maximally preserving surrounding healthy tissues.
Prof. Cyrus Chargari, head of the oncology-radiotherapy department, states that the arrival of the TrueBeam Edge is part of an innovation strategy focused on better targeting, control, and adaptation of treatments for the most complex situations. Beyond technological performance, this equipment improves the quality of care through its precision, safety, and treatment speed.
The commissioning of this equipment required several months of close collaboration between the biomedical, technical, IT, medical physics, and radiation protection teams. An exceptional logistical operation involving a crane was organized for the delivery of the 12 tons of equipment.
Before welcoming the first patients, several weeks of rigorous quality controls were carried out by doctors, medical physicists, dosimetrists, radiographers, and technical teams, as recalled by Dr. Catherine Jenny, head of the medical physics unit at AP-HP. Sorbonne Université.
This initiative demonstrates the commitment of the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital teams to providing increasingly precise, safe, and personalized treatments.
