Université Laval and Sorbonne University have renewed their strategic partnership for a period of five years, thereby consolidating their transatlantic scientific and academic ties.

This new chapter of cooperation builds on long-established scientific links. Since 2021, this partnership has funded over 25 research projects, produced more than 420 scientific co-publications, and facilitated around one hundred student and staff mobility exchanges. Summer schools, joint doctoral supervisions, and numerous scientific events have also enriched this dynamic.
Collaborations span a wide range of fields, including health, engineering sciences, social sciences, artificial intelligence, northern studies, oceanography, scientific heritage, and knowledge communication. This partnership fosters the emergence of transformative projects and transatlantic research entities.
« This renewal demonstrates strong trust between our university communities and a shared commitment to learn, reflect, and act together. By combining our expertise, we create concrete opportunities to advance research and to train and support the next generation, » stated Sophie D’Amours, Rector of Université Laval.
Three new joint chairs have been established: the Research Chair on Knowledge, Power, and Scientific Diplomacy ULaval-SU-FRQ, co-led by Anna-Lena Rüland (Université Laval) and Alessandra Ballotti (Sorbonne Université); the GEOMARIS Research Chair on marine and coastal geomatics and ecology, co-led by Jean-Luc Jung (Sorbonne Université) and a professor from Université Laval (appointment expected in 2027); and the MétaPrAM Research Chair on metabolomics applied to cardiometabolic health, co-led by Jean Philippe Drouin Chartier (Université Laval) and Antonin Lamazière (Sorbonne Université).
« Our two universities share a history, a language, and common values. We are delighted today by the continuation and consolidation of our strategic partnership in service of an inclusive, sustainable, and innovative university model, » affirmed Nathalie Drach-Temam, President of Sorbonne University.
This renewal marks a new chapter in the relationship between the two universities, contributing to the influence of science and the dissemination of knowledge on both sides of the Atlantic.
